Analysis of Bone Microstructural Changes Using Raman Spectroscopy in Women with Varus Deformity of the Knee Joint in the Course of the Primary Osteoarthritis

The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between level deformation, degeneration rate knee joint, and change in structure subchondral bone layer affected by osteoarthritis women. included patients diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis, varus planned for surgical treatment form arthroplasty. underwent a clinical radiological assessment using standard radiographs joints anterior–posterior lateral positions, while deformity joint determined on basis measurement lower limbs. Cartilage materials from tibial plateau were collected 30 during treatments; these then processed examined Raman spectroscopy technique at Department Optical Spectroscopy Poznań University Technology Renishaw inVia micro-Raman system coupled confocal microscope. obtained scattering spectra analyzed measuring individual band intensities, results ratios selected bands assigned chemical groups expressed as mineralization index. divided into two groups, first range 3–10 degrees second 11–30 degrees. also four depending degree, Kellgren–Lawrence scale. investigation indicated that there is relationship deformation scales based examination, coefficient, which determines changes microstructure. showed decrease occurred medial condyles progressed. This confirmed useful tool further research regarding pathogenesis course may have an impact early diagnosis osteoarthritis.
